"Is PrEP actually safe?" — that's one of the questions almost everyone asks before starting. It's a good question. Here are honest answers to the most common ones.
Does PrEP really protect against HIV?
When taken consistently and correctly, PrEP is highly effective. Studies consistently show high protection rates with regular daily use. With the on-demand method (IPERGAY protocol), this applies to planned sexual encounters.
No medication offers 100% certainty — but PrEP is one of the most effective HIV prevention tools available.
Can I take PrEP with other medications?
There are interactions worth discussing with your doctor before starting. Some NSAIDs (e.g. ibuprofen), certain antibiotics, and other medications may be relevant in combination with TDF-based PrEP. The pre-start conversation is important.
Does PrEP damage the kidneys?
This is one of the most commonly raised concerns. TDF (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate), one of the components in most PrEP formulations, can mildly affect kidney function in some people. This is why kidney function monitoring is a standard part of PrEP follow-up.
For people with pre-existing kidney conditions, TAF-based PrEP (e.g. Descovy®) is often better tolerated — something to discuss with your doctor.
Is PrEP addictive?
No. PrEP is not physically or psychologically addictive. You can stop taking it with appropriate medical guidance at any time.
What if I miss a dose?
For daily PrEP: if you've missed a tablet, take it as soon as you remember — unless it's almost time for the next dose. Read the package insert or ask your doctor if you're unsure.
For on-demand PrEP, different rules apply — these should be discussed with your doctor in advance.
Do I still need other protection?
PrEP protects only against HIV. Against other sexually transmitted infections — syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia — PrEP offers no protection. Regular STI testing remains important.
